Best Compact Digital Cameras

By Dan Feildman

The technology behind today?s digital camera is all about the concept of small. The use of technology has caused our world to speed up and in this fast pace people want their gadgets to be accessible. Digital cameras are not the exception to the rule. This desire for accessibility is the major factor behind the birth of a compact edition of digital cameras.

One of the most revolutionary discoveries might arguably be digital technology in the field of photography. Digital technology has changed the world of photography by giving the consumer high quality images with limited cost. Today?s compact digital cameras are smaller in size and have more features than their counterparts. Another argument can be made that compact digital cameras are actually a step ahead of digital SLR cameras or any other camera available on the market today.

The standard proportions of compact digital cameras can roughly be 3.5 W x 2.5 H x 1.0 D. These dimensions can vary a little here and there, depending upon the type, the model and the brand of your compact digital camera. One interesting thing that you must know about the compact digital cameras is that an ideal compact digital camera has to have the certified label of Jeanspocket. A compact camera with this trademark is so compact that you can keep it in the pocket of your jeans, comfortably. It is a newer striking criterion added to the compact digital cams by fast generation of today.

The goal behind compact digital cameras is to make photography simple and easy with no cumbersome cameras.

Apart from size these cameras offer many other incredible features. Typical features of compact digital cameras include multiple scenes, optical zooms, exposure modes and other handy functions. It is important to note that some compact digital cameras, having 11 mm or less diagonal sensors make fairly low noise at ISO 100. However, at ISO 400 and above, the noise of the camera can be quite bothersome. There are a few compact digital cameras that are so small to look at, that they demand a close look from those who wish to buy them.

The range of $200 to $500 includes the most popular selections of the compact and ultra-compact digital cameras. All the brands of compact digital cams offer a vast array of exciting functions and features. The sensor resolutions vary from 3.0 to 8.0 mega pixels and even more. The ultra-compact models can have the size so small like a credit card. They are just less than an inch thick and are equipped with advanced features and high-resolution sensors. the advanced controls include common features like, multiple AF zones, manual settings and sophisticated scene modes.

Obviously there are some drawbacks to compact digital cameras as well as benefits. The ISO range of most compact digital camera varies between ISO 50 and 400. On the other hand SLR cameras have ISO values in the range of 100 to1600. As you can see compact digital cameras are less sensitive than digital SLR cameras.

While the realm of digital SLR?s has remained unchanged over the past few years there have been vast improvements in the field of compact digital cameras. If you are looking to purchase a compact digital camera your best bet is to figure out your needs after looking at the pros and cons for each type of camera.

Cheap Underwater Cameras: Are There?

By James Brown

Cameras always bring smiles to us, how much more if these are cheap underwater cameras. It not only brings that certain beam in our faces but also in our pockets. The sea, oceans and other forms of water scenery gives us that sense of peacefulness and comfort. No wonder why these are some common destinations when we simply want to relax, enjoy and unwind. Taking pictures of such is a common tradition by many. But before unfortunately, cameras don't have that water resistant functionality thus limiting our capturing experience. But thanks to technology, underwater cameras are here to deliver us what we need.

Photographers and hobbyists would surely want to have an underwater camera that is produced by camera giants like Olympus, Nikon, Canon, Sea Life and Sea Viewer. Each of these brand names has been developed with their unique cutting edge technology making their cameras last for years. Much more, each of them has unique functionalities that set their cameras apart. On the other hand, although these are durable products, they are quite expensive to begin with.

With that said, are there still what we can consider as cheap underwater cameras? If so, where can we possibly buy one? Should the price hinder us from capturing the sea and the life within it? Or should we be just satisfied with the normal cameras we have.

Let me give you some helpful areas as to where we can buy cheap underwater cameras without compromising the picture and the gadget's quality. So much more, these are also alternative venues if you can't afford some better price deals in your local techno store.

Direct Manufacturer - is perhaps the best place to get a hold of those underwater cameras and camcorders. These are considered affordable venues for purchase since you are directly buying the gadgets from them. There is no middleman or middle venue to be considered in the first place thus the price of the camera would be the actual retail price. Another advantage of this is its warranty and service since you will be instantly directed to their in house technicians that have the necessary knowledge and skill to solve any camera related concerns.

Internet Market - is the best avenue for the best and the cheapest underwater cameras. Known brands like Canon and Sea Life have their own electronic stores that offer the same retail price like their local manufacture stores. Amazon and Ebay are also great sites that provide search hits for your desired underwater camera. The drawback is that aside from the actual cost of the gadget itself you also need to shoulder the shipping fee which usually incurs when meet ups can't be possible.

Second hand Shops - though there would be a big possibility of owning an old underwater camera, but nonetheless this is an avenue for way cheaper gadget retails. Second hand shops like pawnshops and mini buyers give you this advantage. Although the gadget may present cheap for our pockets, you need to check for possible defects and problems. In addition, you only have limited choices to begin with. But if you can find a trusted seller or a shop, then you can probably get the best deal ever.

These are some of the little venues where you can purchase cheap underwater cameras. Resourcefulness is the key to buy the gadget that you like to own in way lower prices. You actually need not compromise quality just to fit it in your budget but rather find the place where you can buy it with way lower prices.

Camera Image Sensor Comparison

By Joe Morphe

An outdoor security camera, like all cameras, uses an image sensor made up of many pixels which registers the amount of light and converts it to the corresponding number of electrons. The brighter the light, the more electrons are generated. There are two main technologies used for the camera's image sensor.

These two types are the charge-coupled device, or CCD, and the complementary metal-oxide semiconductor, or CMOS. And despite being viewed as rivals in the camera industry, each type of image sensor really has its own strengths and weaknesses. So the better sensor depends on the situation it is to be used in.

CCD sensors were developed specifically to be used in cameras and for the purpose of capturing images. CMOS sensors were developed off standard technology already in use, such as memory chips in computers. However, CMOS sensors today are being developed further for the purpose of being in cameras and the image quality it provides is improving.

CCD sensors are still slightly better in light sensitivity and produce cleaner images than CMOS sensors. Because of higher light sensitivity, the CCD produces sharper images in low light conditions than CMOS sensors.

The two downsides to the CCD sensors are really the true advantages to CMOS sensors. The CCDs make the cameras more expensive since they are harder to put into a camera and an equivalent sensor uses almost one hundred times more power than a CMOS sensor.

Recent advancement in technology is quickly making the CMOS sensor a close rival to the CCD sensor in terms of image quality. CMOS based cameras are lower cost because the CMOS sensors make it easier to build the cameras around them.

Relative to the CCDs, CMOS sensors are more flexible to integration possibilities and functions and have a faster readout. They also require less energy and require a smaller system size. Megapixel CMOS sensors are much more common commercially than megapixel CCD sensors and much less expensive.

In megapixel cameras, the sensors contain over one million pixels, hence the name. To reduce the cost, the sensors are around the same size as VGA sensors meaning the size of each pixel is reduced greatly. This smaller size allows the camera to produce high resolution images with more details but also makes the camera less light sensitive. Since each pixel is smaller in size, and the light reflected from the object is spread across more pixels, it requires better lighting conditions to produce an image.

Five Great Tips when Taking That Portrait

By Dan Fieldman

One of the most popular forms of photography is portrait photography. Just about anyone who can point and shoot their camera can be considered portrait photographers. Obviously, however, there are differences in the quality of the portraits. There are certain tricks that professional portrait photographers use that allow them get the best out of their subjects. Portraits do not necessarily mean only a person's image. Portraits show character and emotion. If it is your goal to become a good portrait photographer I am about to share with you five tips that can give you a step up on the competition.

Rapport: Building rapport with your subject is the firs thing that you should learn. Interest in knowing your subjects is a plus. If you get to know your subject and they know you, your they will become more comfortable in front of the camera. When the shoot comes, you have better chances of getting the best natural expressions of the people you are photographing.

Personality: Always make sure that your photos will show the personality of your subject. You will only know this if you know the person. Make sure that their personality shows in their faces. Personality usually appears when the subject is not expecting a shot, so you have to be ready to take the picture when the opportunity comes.

Lighting: In general natural lighting is best. Don't let this rule of thumb sway you when it comes to emphasizing the person's face and character; in these instances you should always consider using artificial lighting. It is important to make sure the light is evenly distributed, or that it satisfies the angle that you want to emphasize. Lighting can have a great effect especially if you are looking for a serious picture.

Background: Most portraits use lighter backgrounds to emphasize the subject. However, it is also important to use the environment to add more character to your subject. Please be careful when using the environment that the color of your background and what your subject is wearing do not clash. Sometimes backgrounds become the flaw of a picture because the photographer didn't properly plan.

Plan: Be sure that you are ready before you go to the photo shoot. Not only that you have all the equipment that you need, but be sure that you can handle the job properly. Prepare all the necessary materials and be sure to bring a good topic for conversation so that your subject can relax while you are shooting.

Portrait photography is a really enjoyable hobby. If you're serious in making it your career, you can be sure that it can be lucrative as long as you perfect your craft. However, remember that you should have the heart for the job because portrait photography's first requirement is interest.

The CCD, or charge-coupled device, and the CMOS, or complementary metal-oxide semiconductor are often viewed as rival technologies. However, each actually has its own strengths and weaknesses so that one is more appropriate than the other depending on the application.

CCD sensors were developed specifically for the camera industry while CMOS traces it's beginnings to standard technology already in use in areas such as memory chips inside PCs. Today, modern CMOS sensors are advancing in technology and the quality is improving immensely.

The main benefit of a CCD sensor over a CMOS sensor is the higher light sensitivity. Being more sensitive to light means it can produce a better image in conditions where lighting is low.

The problem with the CCD sensor is that it makes the overall cost of a camera more expensive because it is harder to put it inside a camera. The CCD sensor also uses about 100 times more power than a CMOS sensor of equal capacity.

In contrast, the CMOS sensors are quickly over taking the areas that CCD sensors once ruled in terms of image quality. CMOS based cameras always had the edge when it came to cost. It is much easier to build a camera around a CMOS sensor.

This smaller size allows the camera to produce high resolution images with more details but also makes the camera less light sensitive. Since each pixel is smaller in size, and the light reflected from the object is spread across more pixels, it requires better lighting conditions to produce an image.

Lighting Security To Deter Crime

By Andy Rich

A simple way to enhance your home's security is to install some lighting. There are three different techniques to use lighting for security purposes. They are dusk to dawn lighting, motion activated lighting, and a combination hi/lo lighting.

Dusk to dawn lighting the simplest, oldest trick in the book. The idea is that a lit home will discourage a burglar because they can no longer operate under the cover of darkness. It is both real and a psychological tactic that makes the burglar feel less secure.

The lighting system uses a photocell control either external or built into the lights that detect light levels and switch on when lighting levels get low.

The downside to this technique is that the lights are on all night long and the energy costs and lamp replacement costs can really add up. Also, it's hard for neighbors detect unwanted activity since the lights always look the same.

The motion activated lighting is one of the more popular techniques. It is a very effect deterrent and since most of the time the lights will stay off and only go on as needed the energy costs as well as replacement lamps are much lower than the previous technique. Imagine the flood lights coming on while the would-be perpetrator is still 30 yards from the point of entry.

In the combination high/low lighting technique, the first two techniques discussed are combined. It is the setup of having a lower intensity light on all night, and a high beam motion activated light.

Its costs is not quite as low as the motion activated system but not as expensive as leaving the lights on all night. It also provides a nice glow all night which is comforting for most people.

Security lighting can be an effective preventive measure against intrusions on your property and family. And in many cases, just being in the light makes people feel safer. It is cheaper than a full on outdoor security camera system and if all you need a little deterrent lighting security is perfect.

A Few Simple Tricks For Getting A Good Digital Camera

By Chris Campbell

To say the art of photography has gone through massive change in the past few years would be an understatement. More like cataclysmic. Perhaps that's a little dramatic. Not only has the technology changed, but the way people take pictures has changed. Viewing pictures immediately after taking them allows for instant editing. Not only in deciding what pictures to keep, but in other subtle ways with built in camera editing for things like red eye.

The most common mistake I've encountered among people who want to buy a digital camera is that they buy one that is beyond their needs. Before investing in something you will never use, ask yourself a couple of questions:

While all this may seem overwhelming to a newbie, there's no reason for it to be. Digital cameras are rapidly becoming commodity products, and barriers to entry for the technology have been falling fast. There are a few concepts that should be clarified to help make the purchase and use of digital cameras simpler. Consider this your personal guide to digital camera buying and using.

A couple charged device (CCD) or image sensor is to a digital camera what film was to the cameras of olden days. The image sensor is comprised of millions of pixels which respond to the various colors and lighting they are exposed to. It's the number of pixels that give the camera it's megapixel rating. Anything above 5 or 6 is more than adequate to the amateur photographer. Be wary though of cheaply priced cameras with high megapixel ratings (8,9,10). If the pixels are crammed too tightly into the image sensor image noise can occur. Compare image sensor sizes and megapixels, not just megapixels when buying a camera.

Battery technology, has yet to keep pace with the rocketing increase in camera technology. Be sure to include rechargeables as part of your camera budget. They'll be cheaper in the long run, and a greener choice for ours and future generations.

Some retailers will give discounts if you buy the accessories together with the camera, so you might want to look for such offers.

If your getting a point and shoot, you have one shot and one shot only to get a good lens. The one that comes with the camera is the only one you can use. If your into close up photography, make sure your camera has a macro lens function.

I've taken all of one macro picture in my days that was memorable. Some people love capturing the miniature world though. Ignore any specifications for "digital zoom" as the only meaningful spec for a lens, is it's "optical zoom" capability.

If your the type that gets lost navigating through Google's home page, your gonna have a blast with digital camera menus. Digital cameras have plenty of features, and they're all buried in some geek programmers vision of user accessible menus. For the sake of your sanity, look for a camera that has dedicated buttons on the case for all features you find important. You'll be thanking me later.

Well, with those few points in mind, your well armed in any future battle with camera sales clerks everywhere. Just remember to make sure you pay for the things that matter. Good image quality, ease of use, and a good lens are your best chances for good pictures. Don't pay for extra bells and whistles you'll never clang or blow anyway. Happy shopping.

Is Your New Digital Camera Working The Way It Should?

By Chris Campbell

If you're shopping for the best compact digital camera then you should definitely check out the following recommendations.

In order to select the right camera you might want to analyze the offer from Canon, Kodak, Sony and Olympus. Why these manufacturers? It's easy: Canon and Sony offer the highest technology available on the market, Kodak cameras are well known for their user-friendly interfaces and great balance and last but not least, Olympus offers great features like waterproofing that might come in handy every once in a while.

The digital cameras can be structured in the following categories: Ultra compact digital cameras - are perfect for taking them everywhere with you but their viewfinder and controls are not that spectacular.

Compact digital cameras - are very affordable and very easy to use. Creative compact cameras - offer additional features and usually are more expensive. SLR-like cameras - are user-friendly and offer an improved picture quality in lo-light conditions

SLR-cameras - are bigger than the rest of the models and feature the best tools, amazing image quality and highest low-light capability.

If you don't have the time to search the market then you should take into consideration the following devices: the Olympus 720SW - $280, a compact and waterproof camera or the Fuji F30 - $265 the perfect indoor camera.

Unless you plan to get a nice depiction of your flash, avoid having any mirrors or anything reflective in the background that is perpendicular to your camera angle. At best, try to avoid such surfaces altogether, as they could produce unexpected results.

It also has an in-camera editing feature for RAW files which you can use to tweak sharpness, white balance, saturation, etc. and convert these files to JPEG. Other features include 11-point autofocus, 2.7-inch LCD, Expanded Dynamic Range, Dust Alert, and auto-cleaning sensor.

As a rule, try to get the "end people" as far away from the frame borders as possible, in case the photo might need to be cropped further on.

This set of digital camera photography tips should not be counted as state of the art rules, but rather as advice coming from a seasoned photographer.

Have You Found A Really Powerful Digital Camera Yet?

By Chris Campbell

All the photography purists that cringed, squawked, and moaned, when digital photography hit the scene, but now own and use digital cameras, should all take a seat in the back of the room. The same goes for the new round of purists, that are whining about how live view has no business in the hoity toity world of high end digital SLR, and should be sent back to the basement with point and shoot crowd.

When a camera takes AA batteries, there is a good chance it will accept rechargeable batteries as well. You will have to pay more for batteries that are rechargeable, but in time you will save money. If you use regular AA batteries, in a month you can easily go through a megapack of them.

There are two main types of rechargeable batteries: NiMH (nickel-metal hydride) and NiCad (nickel cadmium). If you want the best possible performance from your batteries, you should go with the NiMH. Still, if you already have NiCad lying around in the house, you can use those as well.

To further solidify the argument for live view, one needs to look no further than arguably the two best SLR cameras offered by Nikon. Specifically the D300, and the D700. While there is a big difference in price between these two suckers, there's good reason for it. Obviously live view isn't the reason, but lets have a look.

Next is the Canon PowerShot SX110IS. It is much cheaper than the previous Panasonic, but still a magnificent camera. The PowerShot is more of a personal use, family oriented camera and is almost about a third of the Panasonic camera, at around $230. It consists of a 10x zoom lens and has quite a compact build to it.

You should buy a second set of rechargeable batteries. Even if one of them is in the charger, the other one can be used. Even though a rechargeable battery is fully charged, if you leave it for a few weeks it will lose some of its power. In time they will discharge completely.

Last, but not least, is the Pentax Optio W60 at a price of approximately $280. Even though a bit pricier than then Canon Powershot above, many say it is not as good. Though, the Pentax has a few benefits that do not come with other cameras. Firstly, the Pentax is a water proof camera. Now, many will think that water proof cameras do not take good quality photos.

The Pentax proves that theory wrong. With 10.1 megapixels, the Pentax takes pictures of great quality. Pictures taken with the Pentax are sharp, demonstrate good color. The camera has a very good shutter lag, and is very responsive. To be specific, its shutter lag is approximately 5 frames per second. This camera is great for all around use, so in other words, a great camera for a first!

The Finer Nuances Of Buying A Digital Camera

By Chris Campbell

Life is getting easier with the advent of modern technologies. All you have to do now is prepare your cash to buy the merchandise or gadget you want to have. Every product has different features that will suit your needs. Manufacturers of electronic gadgets also joined the trend. They are always producing new items with different highlights. Digital camera camcorders do not want to be the least on the list.

Electronic stores are filled with different kinds of digital camera camcorders. Items range from mini DV camcorders to the full DVD camcorders. With such a situation, you may really find it hard to choose the best digital camera camcorder for you. In this case, you need to consider the following points to ease up your search.

Choosing the typical Mini DV digital camera camcorders would require you to use mini tapes . Mini tapes cannot be used to store long time video coverage. This would mean that you have to buy additional tapes for long coverage. Having to buy more mini tapes would, in turn, mean more expenses.

Even though the camera doesn't fit in my pocket like I used to carry my point-and-shoot devices, it's still pretty comfortable to have with you. Thanks to kit lens' VR (vibration reduction) and its neat balance with the camera's compact body, the weight of the lens won't point it down.

What you can do online that you can't do in even the biggest of big box stores though, is compare products, features and prices until you-know-where freezes over. Yes, it's true the internet will make you smarter . . . if your willing to use it.

Being willing is a good step, but knowing a few good camera sites to start with can make all the difference. Researching online can be a seemingly never ending process.

Always consider the digital camcorder's features before making a choice. Give importance to the way it has been created. Hold the camcorder for a few minutes to check your chemistry with the best digital camcorder you have. If it is possible, try out the lighting and effect features of the digital camcorder to test it up.

Easy Digital Camera Suggestions For Everyone

By Chris Campbell

When you're looking at the specs of a DSLR camera, the list can be overwhelming, full of technical details and specifications. If you tried looking for reviews and ratings of digital cameras, you will feel very confused trying to make heads and tails of all the opinions that customers are sharing.

But if you do take the time and manage to sift through all that information, you will be able to make the best choice.

What exactly is the difference between a SLR and other digital cameras? Why are you looking to buy a SLR and not a compact or a subcompact? You should ask yourself these questions before you spend the money.

The camera manufacturers continue to hype this feature, simply that's what consumers have learned to look for over the years. For the most part, you can just ignore it.

If you really want a better feature to compare, take a look at image sensor size. The image sensor is for digital cameras, what film was for film cameras. The biggest difference being, you don't have to replace it all the time.

Just because a digital camera has a lot of pixels, it doesn't mean that the photo quality is guaranteed. If there are too many pixels, and the sensor isn't big enough, the photos can look over-pixilated or unnatural.

That's enough tech speak. How 'bout I make a few recommendations. The Canon PowerShot A570IS is a great beginner digital camera. It's been on a lot of top 10 lists lately, and continues to sell extremely well. For less than $150, you get 7MP, image stabilization, face recognition focusing, and the solid Canon name brand.

That includes compact cameras, ultra compact cameras, underwater cameras, SLR cameras, cameras lenses and so on and so on. These guys know cameras. So, if your going to base your buying decision on previous best sellers, then you'll likely do pretty good with Canon. They make something for just about anyones budget.

Since you know a few things about SLR digital cameras now, you can start your search for that new digital camera. You should start by checking out the reviews and ratings of different digital cameras.

Try comparing the resolutions and megapixels of a number of different digital cameras. Know what it can do before you go into that shop and buy it. It can be a great investment buying a SLR camera, but considering how much money you're spending, you should really do your research.
