Camera Image Sensor Comparison

An outdoor security camera, like all cameras, uses an image sensor made up of many pixels which registers the amount of light and converts it to the corresponding number of electrons. The brighter the light, the more electrons are generated. There are two main technologies used for the camera's image sensor.

These two types are the charge-coupled device, or CCD, and the complementary metal-oxide semiconductor, or CMOS. And despite being viewed as rivals in the camera industry, each type of image sensor really has its own strengths and weaknesses. So the better sensor depends on the situation it is to be used in.

CCD sensors were developed specifically to be used in cameras and for the purpose of capturing images. CMOS sensors were developed off standard technology already in use, such as memory chips in computers. However, CMOS sensors today are being developed further for the purpose of being in cameras and the image quality it provides is improving.

CCD sensors are still slightly better in light sensitivity and produce cleaner images than CMOS sensors. Because of higher light sensitivity, the CCD produces sharper images in low light conditions than CMOS sensors.

The two downsides to the CCD sensors are really the true advantages to CMOS sensors. The CCDs make the cameras more expensive since they are harder to put into a camera and an equivalent sensor uses almost one hundred times more power than a CMOS sensor.

Recent advancement in technology is quickly making the CMOS sensor a close rival to the CCD sensor in terms of image quality. CMOS based cameras are lower cost because the CMOS sensors make it easier to build the cameras around them.

Relative to the CCDs, CMOS sensors are more flexible to integration possibilities and functions and have a faster readout. They also require less energy and require a smaller system size. Megapixel CMOS sensors are much more common commercially than megapixel CCD sensors and much less expensive.

In megapixel cameras, the sensors contain over one million pixels, hence the name. To reduce the cost, the sensors are around the same size as VGA sensors meaning the size of each pixel is reduced greatly. This smaller size allows the camera to produce high resolution images with more details but also makes the camera less light sensitive. Since each pixel is smaller in size, and the light reflected from the object is spread across more pixels, it requires better lighting conditions to produce an image.

Lighting Security To Deter Crime

A simple way to enhance your home's security is to install some lighting. There are three different techniques to use lighting for security purposes. They are dusk to dawn lighting, motion activated lighting, and a combination hi/lo lighting.

Dusk to dawn lighting the simplest, oldest trick in the book. The idea is that a lit home will discourage a burglar because they can no longer operate under the cover of darkness. It is both real and a psychological tactic that makes the burglar feel less secure.

The lighting system uses a photocell control either external or built into the lights that detect light levels and switch on when lighting levels get low.

The downside to this technique is that the lights are on all night long and the energy costs and lamp replacement costs can really add up. Also, it's hard for neighbors detect unwanted activity since the lights always look the same.

The motion activated lighting is one of the more popular techniques. It is a very effect deterrent and since most of the time the lights will stay off and only go on as needed the energy costs as well as replacement lamps are much lower than the previous technique. Imagine the flood lights coming on while the would-be perpetrator is still 30 yards from the point of entry.

In the combination high/low lighting technique, the first two techniques discussed are combined. It is the setup of having a lower intensity light on all night, and a high beam motion activated light.

Its costs is not quite as low as the motion activated system but not as expensive as leaving the lights on all night. It also provides a nice glow all night which is comforting for most people.

Security lighting can be an effective preventive measure against intrusions on your property and family. And in many cases, just being in the light makes people feel safer. It is cheaper than a full on outdoor security camera system and if all you need a little deterrent lighting security is perfect.

How to Buy A CCTV Security Camera

There are a few basics about CCTV security cameras when deciding to protect your home and family. CCTV cameras come in two forms. They are either CMOS or CCD cameras and are differentiated by the image sensor. CMOS based cameras are cheaper but produce a lower quality image than the CCD camera.

Depending on your needs you can find the camera that is right for you. If you need to identify faces, you'll need a vastly different security camera from a need to simply monitor crowd traffic patterns.

If the area you want to monitor is outdoors, there are requirements such as durability concerns that need to be address unlike an indoor security camera. There are factors such as weather and vandals that will test the durability of your camera.

Other things that will directly impact your buying decision include your budget, for the entire system as well as per individual security camera, as well as the size of your entire security system and the number of cameras you required. The number of cameras you require depends on the number of areas you wish to monitor.

The lighting in the area to be monitored by your security camera is another important consideration. When it comes to the sharpness of the image, this is measured in resolution. Higher resolution cameras will produce higher quality images. Entry level cameras will have resolutions of about 330 lines and up to 400 lines in higher end cameras.

There are more advanced monitoring systems that allow for panning and zooming the camera but for many a standard recording device will suffice. Most people will use a digital video recorder, or DVR to record directly onto a harddisk.
